A case of leucism in the burrowing owl Athene cunicularia (Aves: Strigiformes) with confirmation of species identity using cytogenetic analysis Rev. Bras. Zool.
Nogueira,Denise M; Alves,Maria Alice S.
Leucism is an inherited disorder, characterized by the lack of pigments in part or all of the body, normal coloration of the eyes and, in birds, in naked parts such as the bill and legs. This kind of disorder is sometimes erroneously designated as albinism or partial albinism. In this study, we present a case of leucism in a wild owl. The studied individual presented completely white plumage, light-yellow coloration of legs and bill and normal coloration of eyes. According to morphological features, this owl is a specimen of burrowing owl, Athene cunicularia (Molina, 1782). To confirm the species identity, we used cytogenetic analyses for karyotypic determination, comparing it to the previously described one in the literature. We also studied a captive...

Amblyomma dissimile Koch (Acari: Ixodidae) attacking Primolius maracana Vieillot (Psittaciformes: Psittacidae) in the Amazon region, state of Pará, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Scofield,A; Bahia,M; Martins,AL; Góes-Cavalcante,G; Martins,TF; Labruna,MB.
The tick Amblyomma dissimile Koch feeds preferentially on reptiles (Squamata), although amphibians (Anura) also seem to be important hosts. We report an A. dissimile nymph infesting a blue-winged macaw, Primolius maracana, held in captivity in the Mangal das Garças Park, State of Pará, Brazil. Environmental observations suggest that free-living iguanas (Iguana iguana), which used to walk on the bird enclosure in the park, were the source of the A. dissimile tick that infested the blue-winged macaw. We provide the second world record of a bird host for A. dissimile, and the first bird record for this species in South America.

Aves migratórias ocorrentes no Pantanal: caracterização e conservação. Infoteca-e
NUNES, A. P.; TOMAS, W. M..

Comparison of growth curve models in Japanese quail raised in cages enriched with different colored lights R. Bras. Zootec.
Karadavut,Ufuk; Taskin,Atilla; Genc,Serdar.
ABSTRACT This study compared the growth curve models for the live weight and body length of Japanese quail raised under lights of various colors. The Brody, Gompertz, and von Bertalanffy growth models were used to investigate the effect of different colored lights on Japanese quail growth over a period of six weeks (1-42 days). Four lights of different colors, comprising yellow, red, blue, and white, were used in the study. According to the different light colors, the mean and standard error for the live weight and body length on day 42 were calculated as 196.09 and 3.87 g and 29.48 and 0.192 cm, respectively. Furthermore, while the differences in live weight according to the color of the light being used were statistically significant on days 14, 21, and...

Fragment edge and isolation affect the food web: effects on the strength of interactions among trophic guilds Biota Neotropica
Melo,Michele Molina; Silva,Cristina Magalhães; Barbosa,Carina Santos; Morais,Maristela Calvente; D'Anunciação,Paula Eveline Ribeiro; Silva,Vinícius Xavier da; Hasui,Érica.
Abstract Habitat loss and fragmentation are processes that may affect communities by changing species interactions. These changes occur because the strength of linkages between species is not exclusively dependent on predator and prey traits. Species interaction changes also depend on the spatial context in which they take place. We used structural equation modelling to evaluate effects of these processes at patch-scale on top-down and bottom-up controls in food webs in Atlantic Forest. The model was composed of multiple species, and trophic guilds responded differently to fragment edge and isolation. Changes in bottom-up and top-down controls were mainly related to intermediate predator interactions. Efforts to restore connectivity among fragments should...

Influence of dietary 1αlpha-hydroxycholecalciferol, individually or in combination with microbial phytase in calcium and phosphorus deficient diets on growth performance and tibia parameter of Japanese quails (Coturnix japonica) Animal Sciences
Kheiri, Farshd; Poshtvar, Mohammad; Jalali Haji Abadi, Sayed Mohammad Ali; Landy, Nasir.
The effect of 1α-OH-D3 in calcium-phosphorus (Ca-P) deficient diets on Japanese quail growth performance and tibia parameters was investigated. Eight-day-old (n = 160) newly hatched quails were weighed and randomly allocated to 20 groups, each with 4 replicate pens of 8 birds. Treatments were as follows: T1, Ca-P-adequate; T2,Ca-P-deficient; T3, Ca-P-deficient + 500 FTU kg-1 of phytase (Ph); T4, Ca-P-deficient diet + 5 µg kg-1 of 1α-OH-D3; T5,Ca-P-deficient + Ph + 5 µg kg-1 of 1α-OH-D3. Results showed that quails fed Ca-P-adequate had significantly higher body weight compared with quails fed Ca-P-deficient, Ca-P deficient supplemented with 1α-OH-D3 and Ca-P-deficient supplemented with 1α-OH-D3 and phytase, but did not differ from Ca-P-deficient diet...

Passeriformes: nest predators and prey in a Neotropical Savannah in Central Brazil Rev. Bras. Zool.
França,Leonardo F.; Sousa,Nadinni O. M.; Santos,Luane R. dos; Duca,Charles; Gressler,Daniel T.; Borges,Fábio J. A.; Lopes,Leonardo E.; Manica,Lilian T.; Paiva,Luciana V.; Medeiros,Rita C. S. de; Marini,Miguel Â..
The identification of predators of birds' nests, crucial to a better understanding of predator-prey interactions, remains poorly known. Here we provide evidence that birds, and especially passerines, may depredate birds' nests in the Cerrado (Neotropical Savannah) of Central Brazil. Data was collected primarily in a Conservation Unit (Estação Ecológica de Águas Emendadas) during the breeding season, between 2003 and 2007. We report and discuss details on 14 events of nest predation, 12 of which by passerines, mostly by curl-crested jays - Cyanocorax cristatellus (Temminck, 1823). The results of our study suggest that the role of birds as nest predators in the Cerrado has been underestimated and needs to be further investigated.

Phytate-phosphorus and phytase contents on the relative weight of organs, intestinal morphometry and performance of broilers Ciência Rural
Catalan,Aiane Aparecida da Silva; Krabbe,Everton Luis; Avila,Valdir Silveira de; Lopes,Letícia dos Santos; Nunes,Ana Paula; Morés,Marcos Antonio Zanella; Roll,Victor Fernando Büttow; Xavier,Eduardo Gonçalves.
ABSTRACT: In order to evaluate the efficiency of phytase in diets with low and high phytate phosphorus (PP) 0content, as a consequence of wheat bran inclusion, on the relative weight of organs, intestinal morphometry and performance, three hundred and eighty-four male Cobb500 broilers were housed in metabolic cages. Animals were assigned into four treatments in a 2x2 factorial scheme in a randomized block design with eight replicates of 12 birds each. From 11 days of age birds received experimental diets, which consisted of: Diet low in PP; Diet low in PP with phytase (500FTU kg-1); Diet with a high PP and Diet with a high PP with phytase (500FTU kg-1). At 22 and 32 days of age two birds were slaughtered in order to collect gizzard, heart, liver, cecum,...

Predation on artificial nests in open habitats of central Brazil: effects of time and egg size Biota Neotropica
Oliveira,Cleyton Washington da Silva; Almeida,Glaudson Pereira; Paiva,Luciana Vieira de; França,Leonardo Fernandes.
The accuracy of artificial nests in representing natural patterns of nest predation has been widely studied in temperate regions and egg size is one of the most tested sources of bias. In the neotropics, experiments with artificial nests usually used larger than natural eggs, despite suggestions in literature that the eggs should be similar to those of the local species. Here, we tested the hypothesis of spatial-temporal variation in predation risk of artificial nests in relation to egg size. We used quail (Coturnix coturnix; large), Chestnut-bellied Seed-finch (Oryzoborus angolensis; small) and plasticine (both sizes) eggs placed in artificial nests. We analyzed daily nest survival using models in the Program MARK. The best-fit model included the effects...

Spatial imprints of plate tectonics on extant richness of terrestrial vertebrates ArchiMer
Descombes, Patrice; Leprieur, Fabien; Albouy, Camille; Heine, Christian; Pellissier, Loic.
Aim In interaction with past climate changes, it is likely that plate tectonics contributed to the shaping of current global species diversity, but so far this has not been statistically quantified at the global level. Here, we tested whether plate tectonics since the breakup of Gondwana left an imprint on current patterns of species richness of amphibians, birds and mammals. Location Global. Methods We reconstructed the absolute positions of continental plates since the Early Cretaceous and used this information to derive variables of latitudinal shifts and potential exchanges among landmasses that could have modulated species richness. Using a multi-model inference approach combining both contemporary and historical variables, we quantified the...
